Write your own letter or Diary Entry
Using what you have learned about the war from the letters and diary entries you have studied, you are going to write either a letter or diary entry from the point of view of a soldier. Your written piece should show a clear understanding of the issues faced by those who were fighting in the war in terms of conditions, daily routine, experiences and their feelings towards both being away from home, and being enlisted as a soldier. You can choose whether your written piece covers WWI or WWII, or a more recent conflict.
Be sure to use the correct format for your chosen piece.
It should be super interesting and engaging, with a real sense of the person coming through. We want to get a feeling of really being there, of the things that happened on a daily basis, the conditions you faced, and how you felt about it. Remember that both letters and diaries are personal accounts, so you can be very personal and emotive.
The text should be drafted and edited and the final version should be between 600 and 800 words. You may break this into a series of diary entries or letters, or simply write one long one.
Your finished product should indicate the following:
- Your ability to use suitable language and vocabulary
- Understanding of conventions used in either letters or diary entries
- Understanding of the experiences of soldiers fighting in the war and the conditions they faced
- Editing/drafting processes
