War and Conflict: Non Fiction
Letters
Letters are far more structural than diary entries because they show communication from one person to another (correspondence). They will often have the correctly formatted addresses in the top left or right corner and usually start with "Dear <insert name>," then on the next line the communication will begin. Letters can be formal or informal depending on who is sending and who is receiving a letter.
Formal letters can be requests, complaints, explanations of issues or circumstances and will often involve a power play between two people or a person and an organisation. These letters will often have a clear purpose and their tone will alter depending on this purpose, for example; a complaint letter may be accusing someone of wrongdoing and will have a lot of persuasive language or a request may be emotively pleading for a specific outcome.
Informal letters are usually personal communications between two individuals (an old school version of an extended text message or facebook message). These letters can have various purposes; they can be deeply personal recounts of a person's life or experiences, they may be observations of an event or daily life, they may be confessions of love or wrongdoing. This type of letter is often emotional and uses imagery to allow the receiver of the letter to see what the writer has done or concerned about.
